Minister of Youth and Sport Jese Saukuru expressed strong support for the Fiji women’s sevens team ahead of their upcoming competition at the Dubai Sevens, which takes place next weekend. His remarks followed the team’s presentation of their i-tatau at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva.

Saukuru highlighted the remarkable growth of women’s rugby globally, noting that it has become a major success story with a significant opportunity for further expansion in the next decade. He pointed out initiatives such as the new Women in Rugby brand and the inspiring “Try and Stop Us” campaign, which have contributed to a record participation of 2.7 million female players worldwide.

Since 2017, there has been a notable 28 percent increase in female registered players, signifying a positive trend in the sport. However, Saukuru also acknowledged the historical challenges faced by women in rugby in Fiji, including societal discouragement and severe personal consequences for pursuing the sport. He commended the dedication of those who have persevered through these difficulties.

The Minister announced that the Fijian government has allocated over $4.2 million in the current budget to support rugby across the country, which underscores their commitment to nurturing talent and promoting the sport at all levels. He reassured the team that the people of Fiji are rallying behind them, emphasizing that they carry the nation’s hopes and dreams as they prepare for their matches.

The Fijiana women’s sevens team is set to leave for Dubai on Sunday, competing in Pool A against formidable opponents including Ireland, China, and Australia.

This commitment from the government and the noteworthy support for women’s rugby indicates a promising future for female athletes in Fiji, creating an environment that fosters growth, empowerment, and recognition in the sports arena. It embodies a shift towards equality and opportunity in athletics, inspiring the next generation of female rugby players.
