Fiji’s Minister of Youth and Sport, Jese Saukuru, assured that the national women’s sevens rugby team will receive ample support as they prepare for the upcoming Dubai Sevens next weekend. His remarks follow the team’s presentation of their i-tatau at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva.

Saukuru highlighted the remarkable success and growth of women’s rugby worldwide, noting that it has become a significant opportunity for expansion over the next decade. With initiatives such as the new Women in Rugby brand and the motivating “Try and Stop Us” campaign, the sport has seen a surge in female participation, currently boasting an impressive 2.7 million players globally. Since 2017, there has been a notable 28 percent increase in registered female players.

However, Saukuru also acknowledged the historical challenges faced by female rugby players in Fiji, including discouragement and ridicule for their sporting pursuits. Some have even experienced severe repercussions, such as ostracism from their families. Despite these adversities, he commended the unwavering commitment and passion these women have shown towards rugby.

To demonstrate the government’s commitment to supporting rugby in Fiji, Saukuru announced a significant allocation of over $4.2 million in the current budget aimed at fostering the sport. This funding underscores the dedication to nurturing talent and enhancing rugby at all levels.

As the Fijiana women’s sevens team prepares to compete, Saukuru emphasized that the people of Fiji stand firmly behind them, carrying the nation’s hopes and dreams into the tournament. The team is set to depart for Dubai, where they will compete in Pool A against Ireland, China, and Australia.

This positive support from the government and the community reflects a growing recognition of women’s sports and the importance of fostering inclusive opportunities for female athletes. The anticipation for the Dubai Sevens marks a new chapter not only for the players but also for women’s rugby in Fiji, inspiring future generations.
