The Minister of Youth and Sport, Jese Saukuru, affirmed that the Fiji women’s sevens team will receive strong support as they prepare to compete in the upcoming Dubai Sevens. His comments came following the team’s traditional i-tatau presentation at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva.
Saukuru praised the growth of women’s rugby, highlighting its remarkable success and the significant potential for further expansion in the next decade. He noted the impact of initiatives like the new Women in Rugby brand and the encouraging “Try and Stop Us” campaign, which have contributed to a record high of 2.7 million female rugby players worldwide, marking a 28% increase in registered players since 2017.
However, he also recognized the historical challenges faced by women rugby players in Fiji, acknowledging the discouragement and ridicule many have encountered while pursuing their passion for the sport, as well as the sacrifices made in its early development.
In a show of commitment to the sport, Saukuru announced that over $4.2 million has been allocated in the current budget to support rugby development in Fiji. This investment demonstrates the government’s dedication to nurturing talent and promoting rugby at all levels.
As the Fijiana women’s sevens team prepares to depart for Dubai on Sunday, Saukuru reminded the players that the nation stands firmly behind them, entrusting them with the hopes and dreams of the people. He assured them of unwavering support as they face the upcoming challenges in Pool A alongside Ireland, China, and Australia.
This investment and support reflect a promising future for women’s rugby in Fiji, illustrating a collective commitment to empowering female athletes and fostering a love for the sport among young girls.
Overall, this positive development is indicative of societal shifts toward greater acceptance and encouragement of women in sports, a step toward more equitable opportunities in athletic endeavors.
