The Fiji Under-20 women’s football team officially presented the traditional i-tatau to President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere at the State House in Suva on Friday, ahead of their participation in the FIFA World U20 Championship in Colombia.
President Katonivere lauded the team’s accomplishments and expressed gratitude towards the coaches, management, and the young athletes for their hard work. He noted that this marks a historic moment as it is the first time a women’s team from Fiji competes at such a prestigious tournament.
Historically known for its rugby prowess, Fiji is now gaining recognition in football, with the President highlighting that the nation has often excelled beyond expectations on the international sports arena. He acknowledged Fiji’s remarkable achievements in events like sevens rugby and emphasized that the women’s football team’s journey is paving the way for a new era in the country’s sporting narrative.
While celebrating their success, the President also pointed out the hurdles the team faces, such as limited funding and inadequate facilities. He commended the coaching and management teams for their unwavering support in preparing the athletes mentally and physically.
President Katonivere further recognized the sacrifices made by the players and their families, as well as the crucial role of the team manager, Naziah Ali-Krishna. He assured continued support and good wishes for the team as they prepare to represent Fiji.
The Fiji U20 women’s team will compete in Group B against formidable teams including France, Canada, and Brazil. This tournament is a significant step for Fiji, showcasing the development of women’s football in the nation and inspiring future generations of athletes.
