Fiji’s Women Make History: A New Era in Soccer!

Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, the President of Fiji, has lauded the achievements of the Junior Kulas and expressed gratitude toward the coaches, management, and the young athletes as they prepare for the FIFA Women’s U20 World Cup in Colombia. In a farewell address to the team, he highlighted this historic moment, stating that it is the first time Fiji has a women’s team competing at such a prestigious level in the FIFA World Championship.

Fiji, known for its prowess in rugby, is now gaining international attention for its achievements in soccer. President Katonivere pointed out that the nation has consistently excelled in sports and is beginning a thrilling new chapter in its sporting history with the women’s soccer team’s accomplishments.

He acknowledged the difficulties the team faces, including limited funding, infrastructure, and facilities. President Katonivere praised the coaching and management staff for their unwavering commitment to preparing the team both mentally and physically, expressing his admiration for their dedication.

The President also recognized the sacrifices made by the players and their families, highlighting the crucial role of the team manager, Naziah Ali Krishna, who is the wife of Fiji’s football captain Roy Krishna and a prominent figure in the local soccer community. Her involvement exemplifies the passion and dedication that drives the team.

Assuring the players of continued support from the State House, the Government, and the nation, he stated, “We will continue to support and pray for the team and the management as you lead and mentor these young ladies who are about to represent Fiji.”

The Junior Kulas will compete in Pool B against France, Canada, and Brazil. This tournament marks a significant milestone for Fiji, showcasing the advancement of women’s football in the country and inspiring future generations of athletes while uniting the nation in support of its football team on the global stage. The Angeline Chua-coached team will begin its campaign against Brazil on 31 August at 6 PM, followed by matches against Canada on 3 September at 8 PM and France on 6 September at 5 PM.
