The inaugural Supplier Development Program (SDP) in Fiji is set to empower eighteen women-led micro businesses, marking a significant step forward for local enterprises aiming to supply eco-friendly, Pacific-made products to the tourism and events sectors. This initiative, launched by the Fiji Commerce & Employers Federation in partnership with the UNDP Pacific Office, underscores a collaborative effort to promote sustainability.

Backed by the Australian High Commission, the six-week program is designed to arm participants with the necessary skills to expand their production capabilities, seize new markets, and innovate greener supply chain solutions. The pressing environmental concern that motivates this program is the average waste generation of nearly 2kg per person per day by conference attendees, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices.

Vodafone Fiji lends crucial support by enabling digital readiness through its VitiKart platform, while the Reserve Bank of Fiji contributes by providing tablets and conducting e-commerce training. These tools are pivotal in helping entrepreneurs establish an online presence and explore larger markets, strengthening Fiji’s economic diversity.

The SDP is an extension of the Fiji Enterprise Engine (FEE), the country’s premier private-sector-led business accelerator, which has previously guided numerous micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to success. With past achievements like the Fiji Thrive Program, which supported local entrepreneurs through mentoring and coaching, and the FEE program’s numerous graduates, this latest initiative continues the mission to empower MSMEs.

The program not only aims to bolster women’s roles in the business sector but also aligns with Fiji’s broader economic objectives by promoting sustainable growth and technological advancements. Through initiatives like these, Fiji is fostering an inclusive environment that values women’s entrepreneurial contributions and encourages environmental sustainability in business practices, heralding a promising future for its local industry.
