Since its launch in April, the Women in Tech Fiji chapter has made significant strides in promoting women’s involvement in STEM across the Pacific region. This initiative, which aims to narrow the digital gender divide, was inaugurated by Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica, with support from Minister of Women Sashi Kiran.

On a recent evening, the chapter celebrated its achievements and future goals at a cocktail reception hosted by the French Ambassador to Fiji, Julie Le Saos. The event emphasized the importance of women’s contributions to the nation’s digital future and reinforced the connection between Fiji and France in pursuing gender equality and technological advancement.

Ambassador Le Saos highlighted the global significance of the Women in Tech movement, stating that Women in Tech Fiji is part of a larger global organization based in Paris that seeks to empower women through technology, aiming to impact five million women and girls in STEM by 2030. She also praised the French Embassy for its support of Women in Tech Fiji in international engagements, including facilitating participation in Europe’s largest startup and tech event, VivaTech 2025.

Fiji’s National Digital Strategy 2025-2030 aims to ensure all Fijians can partake fully in the digital economy, with Women in Tech Fiji playing a crucial role in this mission. The initiative will not only provide vital skills to women and girls but also contribute to a broader strategy of boosting Fiji’s overall productivity and global competitiveness.

The establishment of Women in Tech Fiji reflects a growing recognition of the economic benefits of gender equality, echoing research that suggests closing the gender gap could significantly enhance national economies. The involvement of women in technology and innovation is seen as a pathway to increased entrepreneurship and investment in the digital sector.

Moreover, the event celebrated individual accomplishments within the community, recognizing finalists and winners of the prestigious APAC Women in Tech Awards, further showcasing the impact and potential of women in technology in Fiji.

As Women in Tech Fiji continues to cultivate an inclusive tech ecosystem, it presents a hopeful narrative of progress and empowerment for women in the nation, inspiring future leaders and innovators in the digital economy. Such initiatives reinforce the belief that inclusivity and diversity in technology are not just beneficial but essential for sustainable development and economic growth.
