The Minister of Youth and Sport, Jese Saukuru, has assured that the Fiji women’s sevens team will receive comprehensive support during their participation in the upcoming Dubai Sevens next weekend. His remarks came after the national team presented their i-tatau at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva.
Saukuru praised the remarkable success of women’s rugby, highlighting its global growth and potential for future expansion. He noted that initiatives like the new Women in Rugby brand and the inspiring “Try and Stop Us” campaign have contributed to a significant increase in female participation in the sport, which now boasts an unprecedented 2.7 million players globally. Since 2017, there has been a 28 percent rise in registered female players.
However, Saukuru acknowledged the historical challenges faced by women rugby players in Fiji, ranging from discouragement to severe repercussions for pursuing their passion. He commended the dedication and sacrifices made by these athletes in the early stages of women’s rugby in Fiji.
Further emphasizing the government’s commitment, Saukuru revealed that over $4.2 million has been allocated in the current budget to support rugby development in Fiji. This investment underlines a strong commitment to nurturing talent across all levels of the sport.
As the Fijiana women’s sevens team prepares to face teams from Ireland, China, and Australia in Pool A, Saukuru reassured them that the people of Fiji are firmly behind them. He encouraged the team, saying they carry the hopes and dreams of the nation as they embark on this challenging journey.
In summary, with strong governmental support and a commitment to addressing past challenges, the future of women’s rugby in Fiji looks bright as the Fijiana team heads to the Dubai Sevens, ready to make their mark on the international stage. It is a testament to the athletes’ resilience and the community’s backing that fosters ongoing growth and positivity in women’s sports.
