The Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways is calling on women farmers to participate in the upcoming National Women in Agriculture Symposium, scheduled for March 8 to 11. This year’s event promises to be more inclusive than in previous years, as it will now extend its focus to include farmers involved in aquaculture, agroforestry, and sugar farming, alongside traditional agricultural farmers.

Minister Tomasi Tunabuna emphasized the significance of women’s contributions to Fiji’s economic landscape during the launch of the event. “Here in Fiji, women are the backbone of our rural communities. From cultivating food crops to managing fisheries and agroforestry plots, women contribute daily to our national food supply, efficiency, and economic development,” he stated.

The applications portal for the Women in Primary Industry was also introduced today, reflecting the government’s commitment to integrating more women into various agricultural sectors. Tunabuna pointed out that the symposium aligns with the coalition government’s Women’s Economic Empowerment National Action Plan, reinforcing the importance of gender equality in agriculture.

This approach ensures that all women are given equal opportunities throughout the agricultural value chain, enhancing their role in the nation’s progress. The event represents a hopeful step forward in recognizing and supporting women’s essential roles in agriculture, which could lead to further advancements in Fiji’s economic development.
