The Fiji women’s hockey team achieved an impressive victory against Samoa, winning 9-1 in their opening match of the Oceania Pacific Cup at the National Hockey Centre in Suva. Head coach Alison Southey expressed her satisfaction with the team’s performance, highlighting the contribution of several experienced players who have participated in past events such as the Pacific Games and the World Cup in Oman. This includes athletes like Catherine Fabiano, Divyankar Kumar, Melba Nautu, and Maxine Edwards.
Southey emphasized the positive momentum the team has gained from their opening triumph, stating, “It’s always good going into a tournament winning.” She noted that the team is optimistic as they focus on one game at a time, applying the skills they’ve honed during their rigorous training over recent months.
The coach also pointed out that the four-day tournament will provide a platform to showcase both established talent and emerging players in Fiji’s hockey landscape. Both the men’s and women’s teams have entered two squads in the competition: Fiji and Fiji Warriors.
While the performance was strong, Southey identified a need for improvement in the defense, ensuring they remain competitive throughout the tournament. She mentioned the valuable exposure this event provides to local athletes, particularly for those with prior experience in international competitions.
Following their victory over Samoa, the Fiji women’s team was set to face Tonga in their next match.
A total of seven countries and 16 teams are competing in the men’s and women’s divisions, with the tournament concluding on Thursday.
This strong start for Fiji not only boosts the team’s confidence but also serves as an inspiration for young athletes aspiring to excel in the sport. With continued dedication and focus, the Fiji women’s hockey team is on a promising journey in the Oceania Pacific Cup.
