Fiji has recently appointed Adi Mereoni Vakacerevuna Uluiviti as the new manager for its senior women’s cricket team. Uluiviti, who also oversees the Nausori Majidez women’s cricket team—current champions of the Suva women’s T20 league—brings with her a wealth of experience and a fervent passion for developing team dynamics and individual player growth. This marks her first leadership role within a national team, and she is keen to create an environment that promotes unity and excellence within the squad.
“I view this new role not just as a responsibility, but as a challenge that I wholeheartedly embrace,” Uluiviti expressed. Her focus is on fostering a supportive atmosphere conducive to growth and teamwork as the team gears up for the upcoming Four Nations tournament T20 series in New Caledonia.
As Fiji is currently ranked 72nd in the world, improving its international standing is a priority. Uluiviti aims to build a strong team culture and believes that camaraderie among players will be crucial for their success on the field. “The team maintains a focused and determined atmosphere, with the girls taking things one step at a time,” she said.
In a broader context, 2025 is set to be a pivotal year for women’s cricket in Fiji, with the host nation also preparing to host the East Asia Pacific World Cup qualifier in September, where teams will vie for a spot in the 2026 women’s World Cup. This focus not only reflects a growing commitment to enhancing women’s cricket but underscores the importance of grassroots development through local tournaments and leagues.
Furthermore, Uluiviti hopes to inspire the next generation of female cricketers in Fiji. As the Four Nations tournament kicks off soon, the anticipation surrounds not just the competition but the positive trajectory of women’s cricket in the region, indicating a promising future for athletes in this sport.
Overall, Uluiviti’s leadership, alongside the commitment demonstrated by the national team, positions Fiji’s women’s cricket on a path toward greater recognition and success in the international arena, encouraging more young girls to pursue their passions within sports.
