The Fiji Women’s Sevens team concluded their stint at the opening leg of the SVNS season in Dubai without securing a victory, finishing last in the tournament. Under the guidance of coach Timoci Volavola, the team faced Spain in the 11-12th place play-off, losing with a score of 5-22. Milika Drugunavanua was the sole scorer for the Fijian side, contributing one try to the match.
On a brighter note, the Australian Women’s team triumphed over New Zealand with a close score of 28-24, securing the championship title in Dubai. The Australians showcased a formidable performance throughout the tournament, including a decisive 35-7 win against Great Britain in the semifinals and an impressive 39-0 defeat of Canada in the quarterfinals, where Maddison Levi notably scored five tries.
In other tournament results, the USA claimed the fifth position by overcoming Ireland 17-7, while Japan edged past Canada 24-22 to secure the seventh place.
Although Fiji faced challenges in their performance, this experience could serve as a crucial learning opportunity as they look to improve and regroup for future tournaments. With determination and the right adjustments, the team has the potential to bounce back and showcase their skills on a larger stage.
