Starting tomorrow, food rations provided by the government will be distributed in the Western Division for those residing in evacuation centres. Currently, four evacuation centres have been set up, sheltering 61 households and a total of 234 individuals. These centres include Andrews Primary School, Saioni Church, Korovuto Secondary School, and the Vou Dance Group Office.
Support for these centres has been generous, with donations of cooked meals and hygiene kits coming from various faith-based groups, non-governmental organizations, and the Ministry of Health. Additionally, the Fiji Red Cross has distributed dignity kits to residents at the Saioni and Korovuto Secondary Evacuation Centres.
In light of the impending weather challenges, public advisories have been issued to encourage individuals to remain attentive and ready to act in case of emergencies. The National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) and the Western Divisional Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) are fully operational, with the other three divisional centres closely monitoring their respective weather conditions.
Currently, a Flood Warning is in effect for areas vulnerable to flooding, particularly near and downstream of the Ba, Nasivi (Tavua), Nakauvadra (Rakiraki), and Nadi Rivers. A broader Flood Alert extends to all major river adjacent and downstream regions across Fiji. Police forces are prepared to assist with any necessary evacuations in at-risk areas.
Residents are strongly advised to evacuate promptly if instructed, preferably during daylight hours for added safety. For assistance, the following contact numbers can be used:
– Commissioner Western’s Office: 8811322 or 8811005
– Commissioner Western’s Direct Line: 9994261
– Nearest Police Station: Contact your local station for emergencies.
This proactive response by government and local organizations demonstrates a commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of affected communities during this challenging time. As the situation develops, the collaboration among various agencies showcases the collective effort to minimize risk and provide support to those in need.
