Media representatives in the West gathered at the South Seas Club in Lautoka over the weekend to celebrate their achievements and contributions made throughout the year. The event brought together journalists from various outlets, highlighting the importance of their roles in the economic landscape of Fiji.

Stanley Simpson, the general secretary of the Fiji Media Association, addressed the guests, acknowledging the unique challenges faced by journalists in the region. He emphasized the significance of their work, stating, “I know we think it’s a small number, but I find that it’s very important that the media, together with the opportunity arises, because of the range of, the extent and the breadth of the roles that we play and the work that we do throughout the year.”

Simpson spoke directly to West-based journalists, noting that while they may sometimes feel isolated in their efforts, their contributions are essential for painting a comprehensive picture of Fiji’s current happenings. The gathering served as a rare moment of respite for the media industry, providing an opportunity for relaxation and camaraderie among peers.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity, at this time of the season, that we get together to put our hair down, share a few moments, share a few laughs, because the work can be stressful,” he remarked. Simpson also encouraged the journalists to foster both cooperation and professional rivalry, recognizing the strength in their close-knit community.

“I think I know that you’re a close-knit unit here in the West, we work together. I think it’s also important that you compete strongly with each other, so that we can keep getting the best stories out of each other,” he added.

This event reflects the resilience and dedication of journalists in the West, underscoring the vibrant media landscape in Fiji and the critical role these professionals play in informing the public and fostering community connections.
