Weightlifting Fiji recently celebrated a remarkable achievement with three awards at the Fiji Sports Council (FSC) 2023 Sports Awards, underscoring the progress made in the sport this year. National coach Henry Elder expressed his pride in the athletes’ dedication and performance, highlighting their impressive medal haul at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship.

Elder conveyed gratitude for the support from the Government, which has been instrumental in their success. However, he acknowledged that funding remains a challenge for the federation. “To compete at the highest level, we need the financial backing to provide our athletes with the best resources,” he stated, emphasizing the necessity for improved facilities and high-tech equipment, as well as specialists in various areas to support both athletes and coaches.

In addition to physical resources, Elder underscored the importance of establishing a comprehensive medical support system. He believes that expanding outreach efforts to discover untapped talent across various provinces is crucial for the sport’s growth. The Fiji National Sports Commission has assisted in this regard, helping the federation connect with potential athletes through outreach programs.

Looking ahead, Elder is optimistic about Weightlifting Fiji’s prospects at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, noting that preparations are already underway. “We’ve started identifying athletes who have the potential to secure medals,” he revealed. He also stressed the importance of increasing participation in the sport and securing better financial support to facilitate this growth.

In recognition of outstanding performances, Taniela Rainibogi was awarded Sportsman of the Year, Miriama Taletawa was named Sportswoman of the Year, and Nehemiah Elder received the award for Young Male Athlete of the Year.

This year’s successes not only showcase the talent within Weightlifting Fiji but also highlight the community’s commitment to developing the sport. With continued support and dedication, there is hope for even greater achievements in the future.
