Weightlifting Fiji celebrated a remarkable achievement by winning three awards at the Fiji Sports Council’s 2023 sports awards, underscoring the federation’s progress in the sport. National coach Henry Elder expressed pride in the performances of the athletes, especially following their impressive medal haul at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship.
Elder emphasized the critical role of hard work and dedication that the athletes have shown, as well as the support from the Government, which has been instrumental in their success. Despite the achievements, he pointed out that funding remains a significant challenge for the federation. To compete effectively on the global stage, Elder highlighted the need for enhanced financial resources to provide athletes with top-notch training facilities, advanced equipment, and specialized support from experts.
He stressed the importance of developing a comprehensive medical support system and expanding outreach programs to identify new talent across various provinces in Fiji. The Fiji National Sports Commission has been supportive, facilitating outreach initiatives that have allowed them to recruit promising athletes.
Looking ahead, Elder remains optimistic about Weightlifting Fiji’s prospects at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in 2026, with preparations already underway. They are focusing on recruiting potential medal contenders while aiming to increase participation in the sport. Elder believes that with improved financial backing, they can enhance their development efforts and ensure a brighter future for weightlifting in Fiji.
In recognition of their excellence at the awards, Taniela Rainibogi was named the Sportsman of the Year, while Miriama Taletawa received the accolade for Sportswoman of the Year. Additionally, Nehemiah Elder was awarded Young Male Athlete of the Year, reflecting the bright future of weightlifting in the nation.
