Weightlifting Fiji recently celebrated a significant achievement by securing three prestigious awards at the Fiji Sports Council (FSC) 2023 sports awards, marking a high point in their annual accomplishments. National coach Henry Elder expressed his pride in the athletes’ performance and the medal success at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship during an interview with SUNsports.
Elder emphasized the dedication and hard work demonstrated by the athletes and acknowledged the crucial support they receive from the Government, which has significantly contributed to these successes. However, he raised concerns about the persistent challenge of funding faced by the federation. To excel on the international stage, Elder stressed the need for greater financial resources to enhance the athletes’ preparation with top-notch facilities, modern equipment, and expert assistance.
He further highlighted the importance of a robust medical support system as part of the growth strategy for the sport. Elder pointed out the potential for discovering new talent throughout various provinces, thanks to outreach programs facilitated by the Fiji National Sports Commission, which have successfully attracted new athletes.
Looking ahead, Elder is optimistic about Weightlifting Fiji’s potential performance at the Commonwealth Games in 2026, as preparations are already underway, and they have begun identifying promising athletes who could earn medals.
This year’s FSC awards saw standout performances, with Taniela Rainibogi receiving the Sportsman of the Year award, Miriama Taletawa as Sportswoman of the Year, and Nehemiah Elder recognized as the young male athlete of the year.
Overall, the achievements of Weightlifting Fiji not only reflect individual excellence but also underline the importance of community and governmental support in nurturing sports talent. With a continuing commitment to development and increased support, the future prospects for the sport in Fiji appear promising.
