National coach Henry Elder expressed his pride in the team’s performances, particularly their success at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship.

Elder acknowledged the essential role of government support in facilitating these achievements. He emphasized that consistent financial backing is crucial for providing athletes with the resources they need to excel, including state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, as well as access to specialists in various fields.

The federation also aims to improve its medical support system to ensure the athletes’ well-being and performance. Elder pointed out the importance of reaching out to different provinces to discover new talent, with the Fiji National Sports Commission being instrumental in their outreach initiatives.

Looking toward the future, Elder is optimistic about Weightlifting Fiji’s prospects at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, stating that their preparations have already begun. He highlighted the need to increase participation in the sport and reiterated that better financial support would help achieve this goal.

During the awards ceremony, Taniela Rainibogi was named Sportsman of the Year, while Miriama Taletawa took home the title of Sportswoman of the Year. Nehemiah Elder was recognized as the Young Male Athlete of the Year.

In summary, Weightlifting Fiji’s recent accolades showcase the talent and hard work within the sport, while the federation’s commitment to nurturing and developing athletes points to a promising future.
