Weightlifting Fiji is engaged in a series of trials to prepare for forthcoming international competitions, particularly the Pacific Mini Games. Coach Henry Elder emphasized the importance of these trials, stating that they are vital for selecting athletes for a busy 2024 schedule, which includes key events like the Youth and Junior Oceania Championships in Melbourne.

Elder expressed enthusiasm about the lifts showcased during the trials, marking the latest as the third trial in a series aimed at ensuring athletes are ready for the upcoming challenges. The packed calendar not only includes the Oceania Championships but also the World Youths and World Juniors in Lima, Peru, and the Commonwealth Championships in India.

Currently, the trials involve around 22 male lifters and four female lifters, with some female athletes participating from abroad, submitting results remotely. Elder anticipates that they will aim to qualify around 10 athletes for the Pacific Mini Games, with expectations that about five may compete for medals.

This proactive approach by Weightlifting Fiji reflects ongoing dedication to excellence and the nurturing of young talent within the sport. Coach Elder’s confidence in his athletes is commendable, and the rigorous preparation underway makes for a positive outlook for their performances in 2024.

In a broader context, the team’s efforts align with national aspirations in sports, highlighting Fiji’s commitment to compete on international platforms and showcasing the spirit of determination among athletes. With such initiatives, there is plenty of hope for achieving personal and national excellence in the future.
