The weightlifting team from Fiji is ready for the eagerly awaited Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship, which begins today at the Vodafone Arena. Head coach Henry Elder has put together a robust squad consisting of 24 athletes, primarily composed of school students, along with a few who are in tertiary education or employed.
Elder expressed his contentment with the participants’ commitment and training efforts leading up to the event. “The team is determined to deliver an outstanding performance and secure victories for our nation,” he stated. He is confident that the athletes will represent Fiji proudly through their skills and determination at the championship.
Elder also encouraged fans and supporters to attend and support the team, highlighting that there are no entry fees for the event.
Among the 25 countries taking part in the championship, India will be significantly represented, sending 12 male and nine female athletes. Coach Vijay Rohila noted that the Indian delegation consists solely of youth and junior teams, as the senior team will not be competing. Nevertheless, Rohila and his team are aiming high, aspiring to win all championship categories and bring honor to their country. “We come with one goal: to claim victory, as we have put in the hard work,” he affirmed.
