Eight weightlifters from Fiji are set to compete today at the Vodafone Arena in Suva as the fourth day of the 2024 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships begins.
In the men’s 96kg A event scheduled for 10 a.m., Fijian athletes Tomasi Saukuru, Charlie Lolohea, and Zion Tokona will vie for gold, facing off against eight other competitors in their category. Tokona, who has earned an Oceania Weightlifting gold and two bronze medals, will compete across junior, youth, and senior categories.
The women’s 81kg A event will take place at 12:30 p.m., featuring Olimaipa Secivo who will also lift in the junior, youth, and senior categories. She will compete alongside Elizabeth Waqavou in both junior and senior divisions.
In the afternoon, Suliano Tuqalau and Timothy Vakuruivalu will compete in the men’s 102kg A event. Tuqalau previously represented Fiji at the 2024 Oceania Junior & Youth Weightlifting Championships in Auckland earlier this year. Vakuruivalu, who secured a bronze in the senior men’s 109kg category at the Oceania Weightlifting Championship this year, is also participating in the men’s 102kg A event.
Fiji’s last competitor, Sinate Savou, will participate in the women’s +81kg A and 87kg A events across all categories. She will compete against Eileen Cikamatana, a former Fijian lifter now representing Australia, at 4:30 p.m. This competition marks Cikamatana’s first appearance in Fiji since her switch to the Australian team in 2019.
