Weightlifter Taniela Rainibogi has declared that being named the Fiji Sports Council 2023 Sportsman marks the beginning of greater achievements for him. After receiving the award at the Vodafone Arena on Saturday night, the 26-year-old expressed his excitement, stating, “This is the start of something big and is just the beginning.”

Rainibogi earned this prestigious recognition due to his exceptional performance last year, including significant wins at the Commonwealth Games and Oceania Championships. He made history as the first male lifter from Fiji in 70 years to earn a silver medal on the world stage. His accolades also include three gold medals at the Pacific Games, a gold at the Commonwealth Championships, and a silver at the World Grand Prix. Furthermore, he set three Oceania and three Commonwealth records and was honored as the top athlete at the Pacific Games.

In a remarkable achievement for the sport, Weightlifting Fiji also secured the Sportswoman of the Year Award for the first time, awarded to 19-year-old Miriama Taletawa. She earned her accolade by winning a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Championships and two silver medals at the Oceania Championships held in Samoa last year.

Rainibogi expressed his joy at receiving the award, stating, “I can’t express what it means but I am so happy to receive it.” He took a moment to thank everyone who supported him during his challenging journey, emphasizing the significance of the sport in Fiji, where it is not traditionally popular.

Reflecting on his dedication, he mentioned, “I would walk from Nakasi to the gym; it was a struggle but I never gave up. I kept on believing and working hard to inspire young people.” He is optimistic about the future of weightlifting, noting that there are many talented young lifters poised to make a difference in the sport.
