Weightlifter Taniela Rainibogi has been named the Fiji Sports Council 2023 Sportsman of the Year, signifying the beginning of greater achievements ahead. After receiving his award at the Vodafone Arena on Saturday night, the 26-year-old expressed optimism about the future, stating, “This is the start of something big and is just the beginning.”
Rainibogi earned the prestigious accolade due to his remarkable performance last year, which included significant successes at both the Commonwealth Games and the Oceania Championships. He made history as the first male weightlifter from Fiji in 70 years to win a silver medal at a world level. His impressive record includes three gold medals at the Pacific Games, a gold at the Commonwealth Championships, and a silver at the World Grand Prix.
In addition to his medals, he shattered three Oceania and three Commonwealth records and was honored as the top athlete at the Pacific Games. Alongside him, 19-year-old Miriama Taletawa received the Sportswoman of the Year Award for her achievements, which included a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Championships and two silver medals at the Oceania Championships in Samoa last year.
Expressing his joy, Rainibogi said, “I feel so happy. I can’t express what it means but I am so happy to receive it.” He conveyed his appreciation to all those who supported him throughout his journey, acknowledging the challenges he faced along the way.
Highlighting the significance of the sport in Fiji, he mentioned the struggles he endured, including walking from Nakasi to the gym, but emphasized that he never lost hope. Rainibogi expressed his commitment to inspiring younger athletes, stating, “We’ve got young talented lifters that will make a difference in the future and we look forward to it.”
