Fiji’s Weightlifting Star Set for Greater Heights After Award Win

Weightlifter Taniela Rainibogi has been named the Fiji Sports Council’s 2023 Sportsman of the Year, marking a significant milestone in his athletic career. After receiving the award at the Vodafone Arena on Saturday night, Rainibogi expressed his excitement and optimism, stating, “This is the start of something big and is just the beginning.”

The 26-year-old earned this honor due to his impressive achievements over the past year, including competing in the Commonwealth Games and the Oceania Championships. Notably, he became the first male lifter from Fiji in 70 years to win a silver medal at the world level.

Rainibogi’s accolades include three gold medals at the Pacific Games, a gold at the Commonwealth Championships, and a silver at the World Grand Prix. Furthermore, he set three Oceania and three Commonwealth records and was recognized as the top athlete at the Pacific Games.

In addition to Rainibogi’s accolades, 19-year-old Miriama Taletawa was awarded the Sportswoman of the Year for her accomplishments, which included a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Championships and two silver medals at the Oceania Championships in Samoa.

Rainibogi conveyed his happiness and gratitude, acknowledging the support he received throughout his journey, which has been filled with challenges. He emphasized the importance of weightlifting in Fiji, where it is not a widely popular sport, and shared his dedication by recalling how he would walk from Nakasi to the gym, noting, “It was a struggle but I never gave up.”

He remains committed to inspiring young athletes, mentioning that there are many talented young lifters in Fiji who have the potential to make a significant impact in the sport.
