Weightlifter Taniela Rainibogi has been named the Sportsman of the Year at the Fiji Sports Council 2023 awards, marking the beginning of what he hopes will be even greater accomplishments in his career. Receiving his award at the Vodafone Arena on Saturday night, the 26-year-old expressed that this recognition is merely the start of something significant.

Rainibogi earned the esteemed title due to his exceptional achievements over the past year, including his performance at the Commonwealth Games and Oceania Championships. He made history as the first male lifter from Fiji in 70 years to win a silver medal at the world level.

His accolades include three gold medals at the Pacific Games, gold at the Commonwealth Championships, and a silver at the World Grand Prix. Additionally, he shattered three Oceanian and three Commonwealth records, earning the distinction of top athlete at the Pacific Games.

In a remarkable turn of events, Weightlifting Fiji celebrated a double victory, with 19-year-old Miriama Taletawa clinching the Sportswoman of the Year Award. Taletawa earned her recognition by winning a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Championships and two silver medals at the Oceania Championships in Samoa last year.

“I feel so happy,” said Rainibogi, reflecting on his achievement. “I can’t express what it means but I am so happy to receive it.” He extended his gratitude to everyone who supported him throughout his challenging journey in the sport, which he noted is not widely popular in Fiji.

Rainibogi shared his personal hardships, recalling that he would often walk from Nakasi to the gym to train. Despite these struggles, he remained dedicated, emphasizing the importance of inspiring young athletes. “We’ve got young talented lifters that will make a difference in the future and we look forward to it,” he stated.
