Weightlifter Taniela Rainibogi has been named the Fiji Sports Council 2023 Sportsman of the Year, marking what he believes to be the beginning of even greater achievements. After receiving his award at the Vodafone Arena on Saturday night, the 26-year-old expressed his excitement, stating, “This is the start of something big and is just the beginning.”
Rainibogi earned this prestigious title following an impressive year, which included significant accomplishments such as a notable performance at the Commonwealth Games and the Oceania Championships. His accolades also include being the first male lifter from Fiji in 70 years to win a silver medal at a world competition.
In addition to the Sportsman award, Weightlifting Fiji celebrated a historic achievement as Rainibogi’s teammate, 19-year-old Miriama Taletawa, was named Sportswoman of the Year. Taletawa earned her title through her remarkable performances, including a bronze at the Commonwealth Championships and two silvers at the Oceania Championships in Samoa last year.
Rainibogi’s achievements include three gold medals at the Pacific Games, gold at the Commonwealth Championships, and silver at the World Grand Prix, alongside breaking three Oceania and three Commonwealth records. He was also recognized as the top athlete at the Pacific Games.
Reflecting on his journey, Rainibogi expressed deep gratitude to those who supported him along the way, acknowledging the challenges he faced. “The sport means a lot to me because it is not as popular in Fiji,” he said, recounting how he would walk from Nakasi to the gym despite the difficulties.
He emphasized the importance of hard work and the role of inspiring younger generations in the sport, noting, “We’ve got young talented lifters that will make a difference in the future and we look forward to it.”
