Fiji’s Weightlifting Star Promises Bigger Achievements Ahead!

Taniela Rainibogi, a weightlifter, was honored as the Fiji Sports Council’s 2023 Sportsman of the Year at an event held at the Vodafone Arena on Saturday night. The 26-year-old expressed excitement about the recognition, stating, “This is the start of something big and is just the beginning.”

Rainibogi earned this prestigious award thanks to his remarkable achievements last year, including a stellar performance at the Commonwealth Games and the Oceania Championships. Notably, he became the first male lifter from Fiji in 70 years to secure a silver medal at the world level. His accomplishments also include winning three gold medals at the Pacific Games, a gold medal at the Commonwealth Championships, and a silver medal at the World Grand Prix. In addition, he shattered three Oceania and three Commonwealth records and was named the top athlete at the Pacific Games.

In a historic achievement for Weightlifting Fiji, Rainibogi’s accolade was complemented by the victory of Miriama Taletawa, who, at just 19 years old, received the Sportswoman of the Year Award. Taletawa claimed a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Championships and two silver medals at the Oceania Championships held in Samoa last year.

Rainibogi shared his joy about winning the award, stating, “I feel so happy. I can’t express what it means but I am so happy to receive it.” He expressed appreciation for everyone who supported him throughout his challenging journey in the sport, which he noted is not widely popular in Fiji.

He reminisced about walking from Nakasi to the gym, emphasizing his perseverance and commitment. “I kept on believing in working hard to inspire young people. We’ve got young talented lifters that will make a difference in the future and we look forward to it,” he remarked.
