Weightlifter Taniela Rainibogi has celebrated a significant achievement by being named the Fiji Sports Council 2023 Sportsman of the Year. After receiving his award at the Vodafone Arena on Saturday night, the 26-year-old expressed optimism for his future, stating, “This is the start of something big and is just the beginning.”

Rainibogi earned the prestigious honor following exceptional performances in the past year, notably at the Commonwealth Games and Oceania Championships. His accomplishment marks a historic milestone as he is the first male lifter from Fiji in 70 years to secure a silver medal at the world level. He also triumphed at the Pacific Games, earning three gold medals, and took home additional gold at the Commonwealth Championships as well as a silver at the World Grand Prix. Furthermore, he broke three Oceania and three Commonwealth records and was recognized as the top athlete at the Pacific Games.

In a remarkable moment for Weightlifting Fiji, the organization celebrated a double victory with 19-year-old Miriama Taletawa receiving the Sportswoman of the Year Award. Taletawa earned her accolade by winning a bronze at the Commonwealth Championships and two silvers at the Oceania Championships in Samoa last year.

“I feel so happy,” Rainibogi remarked regarding his award. “I can’t express what it means but I am so happy to receive it.” He took a moment to thank everyone who supported him throughout his journey, acknowledging the challenges he faced along the way.

Rainibogi reflected on the significance of the sport to him, noting its lesser popularity in Fiji. “I would walk from Nakasi to the gym; it was a struggle but I never gave up,” he recalled. He emphasized his commitment to inspiring young athletes, stating, “We’ve got young talented lifters that will make a difference in the future and we look forward to it.”
