Fiji’s weightlifting star Poama Qaqa is set to make an exciting return to competitive weightlifting after a seven-year hiatus. The 28-year-old, hailing from Gau, will represent Team Fiji at the 2025 Pacific Mini Games in Palau, scheduled from June 29 to July 9.

Delighted to be back in action, Qaqa expressed his eagerness to once again wear the national colors on the international stage. “It is great to be back, and I’m really looking forward to representing the country one more time,” he stated. His return comes after a break that began in 2018, during which he reflected on significant past competitions, including the Youth Olympic Games in China in 2014 and the Oceania Championships in 2016.

Training rigorously on his own due to a lack of coaching support initially, Qaqa honed his skills and knowledge in the sport, which fueled his strong comeback. Grateful for the guidance provided by Weightlifting Fiji and coach Hendy Elder, he is committed to training with his teammates in hopes of bringing home medals for Fiji.

Qaqa emphasized the competitive spirit that awaits in Palau: “I know the competition won’t be easy, so the team and I will be giving our 100 percent to win medals for the country.”

Team Fiji’s preparation has seen a total of 186 athletes set to participate in the Mini Games across 12 sports, showcasing the nation’s robust athletic talent. The weightlifting team includes fellow competitors such as Mereia Turaganivalu and Nehemiah Elder, who have shown remarkable promise in their respective disciplines.

The community’s involvement in supporting the athletes is crucial, reflecting a broader enthusiasm and commitment seen across various Fijian sports teams gearing up for the Mini Games. This event not only provides a platform for athletes to shine but also heightens national pride in Fiji’s sporting spirit.

As Team Fiji finalizes its preparations for Palau, the optimism surrounding their potential performances conveys a hopeful message of resilience and determination, promising a memorable showing at the upcoming Pacific Mini Games.
