Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru has praised Weightlifting Fiji for its exceptional achievements at the 2025 IWF World Youth & Junior Championship held in Lima, Peru. He highlighted the extraordinary accomplishment of Nehemiah Elder, who made history by winning three gold medals in the 89kg A Division, becoming the first weightlifter from Fiji to achieve this feat at any World Championship.

Elder displayed remarkable skill and composure while competing against top young athletes globally. He excelled in the Men’s 89kg Youth Division, securing victory in the Snatch with an impressive lift of 152kg and in the Clean and Jerk with 180kg, resulting in a total lift of 332kg.

Saukuru emphasized that Elder’s achievements not only represent a personal milestone for him but also set a new standard for weightlifting in Fiji, proving that dedication and hard work can lead to remarkable success. He expressed gratitude to Della Shaw Elder, President of Weightlifting Fiji, and the coaching team for their unwavering support in nurturing young talents like Nehemiah.

    The time is right for Fiji Weightlifting to have their own HPU Institute. Fiji should protect these young athletes from overseas poaching.
