Fiji’s Weightlifting Future: Young Lifters Inspired by Seniors

Henry Elder, the coach of Fiji’s weightlifting team, believes that the senior weightlifters serve as role models for the younger, aspiring athletes in the squad. He recognizes the significant contributions of junior lifters, emphasizing that they represent the future of the sport, and suggests that their growth can be enhanced by integrating older athletes into their training.

“We also have some senior athletes who played a vital role in the success of our journey,” Elder remarked. He expressed gratitude for having experienced competitors on the team, stating that their presence is crucial for coaches in shaping the younger lifters effectively.

The 24-member team included several young lifters at last week’s Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships held at the Vodafone Arena in Suva. Notable participants included Taniela Rainibogi, Charlie Lolohea, Poama Qaqa, Nehemiah Elder, Zion Tokona, Daniel Shaw, Simione Ravia, Suliano Tuiqalau, and Miriama Taletawa.

Elder highlighted that the involvement of these athletes has given a significant boost to the national delegation. “These athletes have assisted us, and I see a promising future ahead. I am very excited about what we currently have,” he stated.
