Fiji’s Water Woes: Are Solutions on the Horizon?

The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) is making progress in restoring water supply to the upper Khalsa area in Suva, following reports of water cuts that residents have been facing for over a week. Acting manager for communications and stakeholder engagement, Peni Shute, explained that the restoration of supply to elevated areas takes time due to the need to replenish reservoir levels.

WAF has been providing water carting services to the affected areas. The disruptions began last week after heavy rainfall caused one of the gearboxes at the Tamavua Water Treatment Plant to fail. The heavy rains also increased turbidity levels, delaying water treatment and production.

The authority’s responsive communication is seen as a positive step, especially when residents are informed about the causes of disruptions. Many residents express frustration over inconsistent water supply, as it affects their daily lives, from personal hygiene to household chores. The expectation is for clean water to be available whenever they turn on the tap.

Questions arise about the long-term planning for water supply as the population grows, leading to heightened awareness about the need for improved infrastructure. While immediate solutions are being implemented, there is a collective desire for sustainable, non-disruptive improvements to the water supply system. Overall, ongoing communication and effective strategies are essential to address these critical needs on the ground.
