The government of Fiji is set to initiate necessary legislative changes to corporatize the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF). As stated by Finance Minister Prof. Biman Prasad, this move is aimed at ensuring the financial sustainability of WAF. The current budget allocates a substantial $284 million towards upgrading water infrastructure, which includes improvements to water sources, treatment facilities, distribution systems, and efforts to reduce non-revenue water.
One of the key projects involves laying 11.7 kilometers of water pipeline from Sawani to Colo-i-Suva, along with constructing a new pump station and two new five-megalitre reservoirs. This initiative is critical for providing reliable 24/7 water supply to elevated regions such as Sakoca, Nagatugatu, Tacirua, Dokanaisuva, and Colo-i-Suva, which have historically faced intermittent water disruptions.
In addition to these plans, WAF is also set to build a new 20-megalitre Water Treatment Plant, complementing the existing Tamavua facility, with an investment of $12 million. This new plant is expected to benefit approximately 230,000 residents in the Suva to Lami corridor and parts of Nasinu by enhancing treatment capacity and accommodating growing water demand.
Moreover, WAF has commenced work on a new water treatment plant in Navua and a water supply project in the Wainadoi area, further expanding coverage to Naboro, Nabukavesi, and potentially Togalevu and Naimelimeli. Plans are also in motion to extend water services to areas such as Veinuqa to Kasavu in Tailevu and Naqali to Lomaivuna in Naitasiri.
These extensive infrastructure developments come in response to criticism of WAF’s historical reliance on government funding and its inadequacies in providing a consistent water supply. The government’s proactive approach and significant investment signify a commitment to overcoming longstanding water supply issues, suggesting a hopeful outlook for residents who have faced challenges in accessing reliable water.
As both short-term solutions and long-term strategies are put into action, there is growing optimism that the water supply situation in Fiji will improve significantly, contributing to enhanced quality of life for its citizens.
