The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) is currently grappling with operational difficulties at the Tamavua Water Treatment Plant due to heavy rainfall that occurred on Wednesday night. This adverse weather has caused a spike in turbidity levels in the raw water, which has considerably hindered water production capabilities and resulted in alarmingly low levels at the Tamavua Reservoir.
As a consequence of these challenges, several regions are encountering significant issues with water supply, experiencing either low water pressure or complete outages. Areas impacted include the Tamavua Reservoir, Nagatugatu Reservoir, Tacirua Reservoir, and Dokanaisuva Reservoir, notably affecting elevated locations and customers dependent on these systems.
In their response, WAF has mobilized a fleet of 40 water carting trucks to deliver temporary relief to those affected. Treatment teams are diligently working to stabilize operations and restore the water supply as swiftly as possible. The public is being urged to remain patient and to conserve water while recovery efforts are underway.
This situation follows recent similar challenges faced by WAF due to heavy rainfall from Tropical Cyclone Rae, which spotlighted the need for rigorous water quality management. Previously, WAF had to adjust raw water inflow to manage treatment capacity, which in turn affected reservoir levels and water supply in many areas. Active management strategies are being employed, including alternating supply sources to manage turbidity levels while optimizing water treatment processes.
As WAF continues to work on solutions, it is essential for the community to prepare for potential disruptions. Residents are advised to store sufficient water for essential needs, limit non-essential usage, and ensure that any stored water is clean and covered. The authority’s coordinated efforts are focused on ensuring the community’s health and safety during this challenging time.
In light of these operational hurdles, there remains a hopeful outlook as WAF is committed to restoring normalcy in the water supply. Continued community cooperation during these issues enhances resilience and ensures essential water access for all.
