The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) is announcing positive developments in water quality, noting gradual improvements in raw water turbidity levels at both the Waimanu raw water intake and the Tamavua Water Treatment Plant. Although these advancements are encouraging, the filters at the treatment plant are under increased pressure, requiring frequent backwashing, which poses challenges to water production and reservoir levels.

To adapt to the improving circumstances, WAF has boosted the raw water flow to the treatment plant, with teams dedicated to stabilizing the filters and optimizing plant operations for better production efficiency. In addition, a fleet of 38 water carting trucks has been mobilized to provide water to residents affected by supply disruptions, particularly in areas like Bel Air, Mead Road, and Nasinu, among others, where water services have been partially restored.

In Sigatoka, the Matovo Water Treatment Plant’s production has rebounded from 70 percent capacity to normal levels, following extensive cleaning of intake areas and pumps that were impacted by recent flooding in the Sigatoka River. However, the Keiyasi System’s partial treatment plant remains offline due to high turbidity that it cannot process, although efforts continue to stabilize operations at all facilities.

The situation has affected various regions, including parts of Tamavua and Tacirua, while areas like Rakiraki and Nadi experience normal operations. This scenario highlights both the community’s resilience and WAF’s commitment to maintaining public health and safety.

As the outlook for a more reliable water supply grows brighter in the coming days, residents are advised to prepare by conserving and storing water for essential needs. WAF also encourages vigilance in light of potential weather challenges that could arise.

This positive momentum serves as a reminder of the importance of proactive measures in overcoming environmental challenges and ensuring that all residents have access to safe and secure water supplies.
