Fiji’s Water Crisis: Will Levuka Residents Stay Hydrated?

The Water Authority of Fiji has announced that the Levuka Water System is currently facing low raw water flows from its three primary sources: Totogo, Levuka Vaka-Viti, and Waitovu. This issue arises from below-average rainfall in the dam catchment area and ongoing dry weather conditions impacting the region.

As a consequence of reduced raw water flows, the authority has noted an effect on water production efforts and treated water levels in the reservoir, which in turn affects the water supply to customers connected to the Levuka System. The WAF Hydrology team is closely monitoring the situation.

To mitigate the impact and enhance water production capacity, the Water Authority plans to implement valve operations that will ration supply. These operations will take place daily in the early mornings and afternoons, enabling the recovery of sufficient water levels in the dam during off-peak nighttime hours to adequately meet peak day demands.

Customers are urged to use water wisely and are encouraged to invest in storage solutions, such as containers or water tanks, to ensure a backup water supply.
