High water connection fees in Fiji are posing a significant barrier for many households seeking access to clean water. The average cost of connecting to the water system is around $345, a price that is beyond the reach of many communities, particularly those in rural and remote areas. Water Authority of Fiji CEO Seru Soderberg recently addressed this issue in a presentation before the Standing Committee on Natural Resources, discussing the organization’s 2019-2022 Annual Reports.
Soderberg explained that while efforts are being made to upgrade infrastructure, these fees remain a substantial obstacle. In addition to financial constraints, aging pipelines contribute to frequent disruptions in water supply, further exacerbating the problem for underserved regions.
Efforts are underway to address these longstanding issues, with the Water Authority exploring innovative solutions to reduce financial burdens on struggling communities. Soderberg emphasized the need for government support and investment to resolve these challenges and provide equitable access to clean water for all Fijians.
This issue of water access is not new to Fiji. Similar challenges have been reported in various communities, such as Vatudova near Labasa, where residents have faced water shortages for decades and have had to rely on aging boreholes and temporary water carting. Frequent water cuts and supply disruptions highlight the inadequacies of the existing infrastructure, which has not kept pace with population growth and increased demand.
Despite these challenges, there is hope on the horizon. Infrastructure projects such as the $40 million Viria Water Treatment Plant and the Princes Road Infrastructure Project are expected to bolster water supply reliability. These initiatives, among others, are part of a broader strategy to improve the water system’s resilience and prepare for future growth.
While overcoming the financial and infrastructural challenges will require time and concerted effort, the commitment from both government and local authorities to invest in water projects offers a positive outlook. These developments promise to enhance the quality of life by ensuring reliable access to one of the most essential resources—clean water.
