Fiji’s Water and Energy Future: A Game-Changer in Climate Financing?

The Coalition Government is set to enhance international initiatives aimed at improving water services in Fiji, considering the financial constraints faced by the nation.

Public Works Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau pointed out that effective water delivery is inherently linked to energy, highlighting the importance of the water-energy connection in discussions surrounding climate financing.

He stressed that efficient utilization of available opportunities is essential.

“For Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like Fiji, the access to basic utilities such as water and energy is vital for everyday survival, particularly for our grassroots communities. This extends beyond water and energy to include crucial infrastructure like roads,” Tuisawau remarked.

He called for a focus on water-energy connections at the grassroots level as a strategy to combat poverty and create meaningful improvements in the lives of the citizens.

“We need to concentrate on this nexus when addressing climate financing. This includes assessing natural spring or groundwater resources utilizing advanced solar technology, such as solar-powered borehole pumps and solar-powered desalination plants,” he added.

Tuisawau mentioned that these challenges can be tackled through innovative programs supported by smart national frameworks, which can act as transformative agents, particularly for island communities.

He also noted that the Coalition Government has made significant progress in relations with catchment landowners, having received Cabinet approval to establish a framework and policy for compensating landowners for standing trees in catchment areas.

“The Government will continue to engage with all stakeholders, particularly landowners, and address their concerns within the bounds of current legal frameworks,” he stated.
