Municipal councils throughout Fiji are set to upgrade their waste management capabilities through a new partnership with Japan. Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, recently formalized this collaboration by signing an exchange of notes with the Japanese Government and the Japan International Cooperation Agency, securing over $12 million in assistance.

This funding will enable councils to acquire essential equipment, including dump trucks, compactor trucks, bulldozers, excavators, wheel loaders, backhoe loaders, wood chippers, and ride-on mowers. Nalumisa emphasized that this support is timely, given the increasing waste generated by urban growth.

“Fiji is experiencing steady urban growth, and this support couldn’t have come at a better time, as waste volumes are increasing and communities are demanding cleaner and healthier living environments,” he stated.

The agreement signifies the strong and enduring partnership between Fiji and Japan, with Nalumisa noting that this assistance is part of a comprehensive national strategy aimed at developing an efficient waste management system across the nation.

Many municipal councils have been hampered by aging equipment, which has negatively impacted service delivery, underlining the urgent need for modern machinery. Nalumisa expressed gratitude for Japan’s continued support since 2011, reflecting a commitment to fostering sustainable development in Fiji’s waste management sector. This partnership not only addresses present challenges but also paves the way for a cleaner and healthier future for communities across the country.
