The Foundation for the Education of Needy Children in Fiji (FENC) recently reported that it has provided educational support to over 7,000 children this year, a testament to its ongoing commitment to helping underprivileged students. On Saturday, FENC hosted its annual walk-a-thon in Lautoka, attracting around 100 participants who walked from Shirley Park to Natabua High School to raise awareness and funds for their mission.

FENC’s CEO, Nirmala Nambiar, noted that the reported number of children does not include those who have faced additional hardships, such as losing their homes in fires or being affected by domestic violence. Nambiar emphasized the need for continued financial support and announced plans for another walk-a-thon in Labasa, along with a fundraising dinner aimed at raising between $3,000 and $4,000. Many have already pledged their support, contributing directly to the foundation’s bank account.

During the event, Dr. Ram Raju, president of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, highlighted FENC’s essential role in education for vulnerable children, providing them with opportunities from primary to secondary school levels. He praised the foundation for its ongoing commitment to financial assistance, stating, “Every year they’ve continued to raise funds, and the underprivileged are not left behind.” Dr. Raju participated in the walk-a-thon for the first time and donated $500, while the Sugar Cane Growers Fund also made a contribution.

The enthusiasm witnessed at the walk-a-thon underscores community spirit and collaboration in making a positive impact on the lives of children in Fiji. Such collective efforts not only address immediate educational needs but also foster a hopeful environment for future generations. As FENC continues to seek support and implement initiatives, it highlights the significant role that shared commitment plays in uplifting vulnerable communities.
