The Vocevoce family will proudly witness two of their members competing at the international rugby stage this weekend. Mesake Vocevoce, a lock for the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua, is set to play for the First Nations and Pasifika team against the British and Irish Lions. He joins a 27-man squad which features fellow Fijian players, including Mesake Doge of the Drua, Seru Uru from the Queensland Reds, and Issak Fines-Leleiwasa of the Western Force.
Simultaneously, in women’s rugby, Mere Vocevoce, Mesake’s niece, is following in her uncle’s footsteps by making her international debut as part of the Vodafone Fijiana XV team, slated to face the USA women’s team on July 19. At just 19, Mere is one of four players from the Fijiana 7s team making the transition to the 15s format, showcasing the versatility and talent emerging within the Fijian rugby ranks. The other selected players from the 7s team include Verenaisi Ditavutu, Kelerayani Luvu, and Ilisapeci Delaiwau.
Mere has expressed her excitement for her first Test match as part of the squad, which is part of their preparation for the Rugby World Cup scheduled to take place in England later this year, from August 22 to September 27. This weekend marks a significant moment for both Mesake and Mere, not only highlighting their personal achievements but also emphasizing the growing rugby culture within Fiji, which is resonating throughout the sport globally.
Both members of the Vocevoce family exemplify perseverance and dedication, inspiring hope among young athletes in their home nation as they represent Fiji on the world stage.
