Fiji’s Vital Medicine Supply Chain: Challenges and Innovations

Spread the love

Fiji’s Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MOHMS) is highly dependent on the Fiji Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Services (FPBS) for the distribution of medicines and medical supplies across the country. As the only warehouse managed by the ministry, FPBS is vital for delivering essential health products to over 200 health facilities throughout the islands.

A recent media tour provided insights into the operations of FPBS, particularly in response to concerns about shortages of medical supplies due to global supply chain disruptions. Since Fiji cannot produce most medical supplies locally, it relies heavily on international suppliers for procurement. FPBS director Jeremaia Mataika noted that, upon arriving in Fiji, medical supplies are sent to FPBS for processing and distribution. The distribution plan ensures that health facilities receive supplies regularly, with remote areas being serviced quarterly.

The budget for FPBS has increased dramatically, rising from $60 million to approximately $95.2 million, reflecting its expanded role in the health system. The procurement process adheres to strict government regulations, with formal tendering required for purchases exceeding $50,000. FPBS works closely with the Medicines Regulatory Authority to ensure that all procured products meet safety and efficacy standards.

In an effort to modernize operations, FPBS has implemented the M-Supply system, a digital platform that streamlines inventory management and procurement processes across all 230 health facilities. This has improved accuracy in tracking supplies and responding promptly to critical stock levels.

The ministry is also taking steps to expand warehousing capabilities to address logistical challenges. Current plans involve building additional warehouses in the Northern and Western divisions to cater to Fiji’s diverse geography. Lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic have emphasized the need for pre-stocking critical items and ensuring better distribution networks.

Moving forward, FPBS aims to enhance supply chain management through improved inventory oversight, strategic stockpiling, and further digitization. With ongoing support from international partners and a focus on strengthening local logistics, FPBS is committed to providing all Fijians with access to essential medicines and medical supplies.

In summary, the FPBS is actively addressing current challenges in the medical supply chain while preparing for future needs, ensuring that essential health services remain available to all, regardless of location. This commitment to improvement reflects a hopeful outlook for healthcare in Fiji, aiming to build a more resilient and responsive system.
