The Fijian government has announced an ambitious plan to establish the nation’s first cardiac training academy by 2026, aimed at nurturing a local workforce of specialized cardiac professionals. This commitment was highlighted by Acting Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka during the third anniversary of the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital in Nasese.

In his address, Gavoka emphasized the significant achievements of the hospital, which has positioned Fiji as a leader in pediatric care within the region. He noted that the facility has successfully performed 363 life-saving cardiac surgeries and conducted over 30,000 comprehensive heart screenings since its inception, demonstrating a profound transformation in the healthcare landscape for children.

Families who previously faced difficult choices between financial constraints and their children’s health have benefited from the world-class treatments provided by the children’s hospital free of charge. The Acting Prime Minister referred to this initiative as a milestone in public-private partnership, reinforcing the belief that access to quality healthcare is a fundamental right for all citizens.

The event also recognized the critical role of the Tappoo family and the Sai Prema Foundation’s philanthropic efforts in establishing the hospital, underscoring their commitment to creating a lasting legacy in healthcare.

The establishment of a cardiac training academy is expected to build on these successful initiatives by ensuring that local medical professionals receive specialized training, further enhancing the quality of care available to children with cardiac conditions.

This hopeful development reflects a broader movement towards improving healthcare access in Fiji and the Pacific, driven by compassion, collaboration, and a deep commitment to children’s health. As the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital continues its vital role in the community, the future for pediatric cardiac care looks promising.
