The Fiji Bureau of Statistics (FBoS), in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund, has initiated a steering committee that includes various government and non-government organizations aimed at crafting a National Population Policy. Recently, a two-day consultation took place in Suva, where key stakeholders discussed critical national issues such as infrastructure development in maritime zones, market access, rural development, youth empowerment, education access, job opportunities, health facility improvements, and environmental challenges.
FBoS CEO Kemueli Naiqama emphasized the importance of these discussions for enhancing the quality of life and community well-being in Fiji. He outlined that the comprehensive policy derived from these consultations will be submitted to Parliament for approval. Upon approval, the government will prioritize areas that need intervention and allocate proper budget provisions accordingly.
During the forum’s conclusion, Shiri Gounder, the Permanent Secretary of Finance, stressed the government’s commitment to an inclusive and consultative approach to policy-making. This method allows a rich exchange of perspectives, critical for developing a policy that aligns with the needs and aspirations of the Fijian people, as highlighted in the new National Development Plan.
Mr. Gounder noted that understanding population dynamics is vital as they influence various facets of the nation including economic growth, employment, social security, health, education, and environmental sustainability.
