Fiji’s Villages Unite Against Rising Drug Crisis: A Call for Local Action

Villages in Fiji are being called upon to implement strict local laws to combat escalating drug use and its associated crises before the situation worsens. Tui Wailevu Sitiveni Niumataiwalu emphasizes that the origins of drug problems often lie within the village itself, rather than from external influences. He advocates for clear regulations that inform community members about the serious consequences of drug use.

Niumataiwalu highlighted the difference between village governing laws and national laws, urging village leaders and elders to establish firm limits on drug use and trade within their communities. “If we outline strict regulations and rules on the use and sale of drugs within village boundaries, people won’t even bother coming into the village with that plan,” he noted, emphasizing the crucial role of local governance in fostering community safety.

Concurrently, Minister for iTaukei Affairs Ifereimi Vasu has linked the increase in drug use to a rise in HIV/AIDS cases due to the shared use of needles among drug users. He requested immediate action at both community and national levels to address this public health concern, echoing calls for a collective response to prevent the situation from becoming unmanageable.
