Rural and maritime communities in Fiji are actively joining forces with law enforcement to combat the growing issue of drug abuse, with Muavuso Village in Lami taking a prominent role in this initiative. Village Elder Kaliova Narukutabua stresses the importance of collective involvement, advocating for all residents to participate in addressing the drug problem in their community.
To facilitate this effort, various subcommittees have been formed to tackle key issues related to illegal drug activities. Narukutabua noted, “They are all aware of the village rule, anyone found engaging in illegal activities such as drugs, in possession or selling, will be dealt with by the enforcement officers.” This firm stance reflects the collaborative spirit among traditional and law enforcement leaders in recognizing the significant impact of drug-related issues.
Village Headman Seru Bakaniceva points out that offenders will first face the village elder before being handed over to the Fiji Police Force, ensuring a local traditional process is respected while aligning with formal law enforcement procedures.
This initiative echoes the broader efforts by the Fiji Police Force, which have been emphasizing the necessity for a united and comprehensive approach in fighting drug-related challenges. Earlier this year, police officials highlighted that addressing drug misuse and trafficking requires collaboration among communities, local authorities, and government bodies to safeguard the future of Fiji’s youth.
As seen in previous reports from Kadavu and other regions, community leaders are taking a proactive stance in collaborating with law enforcement, bringing hope that united efforts can lead to healthier and safer environments. The emphasis on local engagement and traditional leadership in addressing these issues signifies a promising direction in tackling drug problems effectively throughout the nation.
These actions exemplify the commitment within Fiji to ensure that all generations can enjoy a drug-free future while reinforcing the cultural values and integrity of the community.
