Veteran goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau has secured his spot in Fiji’s 26-member squad set to compete in the remaining matches of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Papua New Guinea. At 42 years old, Tamanisau not only serves as a Police Inspector but also showcased his exceptional skills by earning the Golden Glove award at the recent FMF Inter District Championship (IDC) in Lautoka. His leadership was instrumental in guiding the Babasiga Lions to victory over Navua in a tense penalty shootout.
Hailing from Naisaumua in Tailevu, Tamanisau is expected to play a crucial role in the team coached by Rob Sherman, especially following their opening qualifier win against Fiji on October 10.
Joining Tamanisau in the goalkeeper lineup are Akuila Mateisuva from Suva and Sydney-based Jerome Narayan. The squad also sees the return of seasoned Labasa striker Christopher Wasasala and includes several overseas-based players such as captain Roy Krishna and midfielder Nabil Begg.
Notably, some prominent players like Joela Biuvanua and Josh Laqeretabua have been left out of the roster, while Mosese Nabose, Merrill Nand, and Antonio Tuivuna make a return after missing the first match.
The Bula Boys are set to depart for PNG on Sunday, where they will face the national team of Papua New Guinea on Thursday, followed by a match against New Caledonia the following Sunday.
With a mix of experienced players and exciting talent, Fiji’s squad appears well-rounded and ready to make an impact in the qualifiers. Tamanisau’s performance and leadership will be crucial for the team as they aim for success on the international stage.
This development not only highlights Tamanisau’s remarkable career in sports but also fosters hope for Fiji’s prospects in the ongoing qualifiers, showcasing the resilience and talent that the Bula Boys possess.
