Veteran goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau has successfully secured his place in Fiji’s 26-member squad for the upcoming matches in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, which will take place in Papua New Guinea. At 42 years old and serving as a Police Inspector, Tamanisau showcased his talent at the recent FMF Inter District Championship (IDC) in Lautoka, where he earned the Golden Glove award and helped the Babasiga Lions clinch victory over Navua in a tense penalty shootout.

As a cherished player from Naisaumua, Tailevu, Tamanisau is expected to be a crucial element of the team coached by Rob Sherman. Fiji started the qualifiers on a high note, winning their opening match against Suva with a score of 1-0 on October 10.

In addition to Tamanisau, the squad also includes fellow goalkeepers Akuila Mateisuva from Suva and Jerome Narayan, who plays in Sydney. The team has welcomed back experienced Labasa forward Christopher Wasasala. Overseas-based players such as Gabriel Matanisiga, Mohammed Raheem, Captain Roy Krishna, Nabil Begg, Leroy Jennings, and Scott Wara add a wealth of international experience to the lineup. However, notable exclusions include youngsters Josh Laqeretabua and Joela Biuvanua from Nadi.

Despite some key players not making the cut, seasoned players like Mosese Nabose, Merrill Nand, and Antonio Tuivuna return after missing the first match. The Bula Boys are set to depart for Papua New Guinea on Sunday, preparing to face PNG on Thursday, followed by a match against New Caledonia the following Sunday.

With a mix of experience and fresh talent, Fiji’s team is showing promising potential as they work towards achieving a spot in the World Cup. Their journey in these qualifiers is a testament to the dedication and skill present within Fijian football. Fans and players alike are hopeful for a successful campaign.
