The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) is set to implement robust post-budget monitoring and enforcement efforts following the recent announcement of the 2025-2026 Fijian National Budget, which includes a reduction in Value Added Tax (VAT) from 15% to 12.5%, effective August 1, 2025. FCCC Chief Executive Officer, Senikavika Jiuta, emphasized the importance of ensuring that the benefits of these fiscal measures are passed on to consumers.
In her statement, Jiuta stressed that businesses have a responsibility to accurately adjust their prices in alignment with the new tax and duty rates, ensuring that consumers feel the intended relief. The FCCC will wield its Price Monitoring and Enforcement Taskforce to oversee compliance among traders and prevent any unethical practices, such as price manipulation during the transition period. “Any attempt to withhold these benefits or exploit consumers will not be tolerated,” she asserted.
The FCCC will collaborate with the Fijian Revenue & Customs Services to conduct targeted inspections and ongoing compliance checks. This will include monitoring both essential zero-rated items and products that should reflect reduced tax rates. In the lead-up to the budget, the FCCC conducted over 120 market surveys, establishing pricing baselines that will now inform their post-budget assessments.
Furthermore, the FCCC encourages consumers to report any discrepancies in pricing, as community engagement is essential in fostering a fair marketplace. The overarching message from the FCCC is clear: the new budget relief measures are designed for all Fijians, focusing on maintaining fairness and accountability throughout the supply chain from importers to retailers.
These initiatives are optimistic steps toward enhancing consumer rights and fostering a transparent trading environment in Fiji. By holding businesses accountable and prioritizing ethical practices, the FCCC aims to build a community-oriented marketplace where fairness prevails. As the implementation of the budget progresses, there is hope that all Fijians will benefit from these reforms, ultimately contributing to improved living standards and economic stability.
