Some enterprises may not comply with a recent reduction in Value Added Tax (VAT), potentially undermining governmental attempts to alleviate living expenses. Starting August 1, the VAT rate will decrease from 15 percent to 12.5 percent, a shift highlighted by Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad, who has emphasized the legal obligation for all businesses to adhere to this new rate.

Prasad has urged that the difference from the VAT reduction should not be retained as additional profit; instead, it must be fully passed on to consumers. He expressed concerns that certain enterprises have already been raising prices, which contradicts the intent behind the VAT cut. The Consumer Council of Fiji has been vocal about such practices, citing cases where businesses have increased menu prices in anticipation of the VAT reduction.

To maintain compliance, a multi-agency task force comprising the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS), the Consumer Council, the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation (FCEC), and the Ministry of Finance will closely monitor price adjustments. The Minister underscored the moral and legal responsibilities businesses have when governmental policies are enacted to provide relief.

Highlighting the government’s broader economic strategy, Prasad indicated that the recent budget, which has been well-received, is aimed at bolstering economic growth, consumer confidence, and investment. He reiterated that while businesses are entitled to profit, inappropriate price increases in light of the VAT reduction will not be tolerated and could lead to sanctions.

This VAT reduction and the surrounding economic measures are seen as a beacon of hope for many Fijians, aiming to provide immediate relief amid rising living costs while fostering a more stable economic landscape moving forward. The ongoing efforts signal a commitment to ensuring that tax benefits reach those who need them most, reinforcing trust and fairness in the marketplace.
